Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a county-wide program in which students in 4th and 5th grades can choose to take part in. Students read as many of the books on the list as they can between June-March, completing a book review/report for each. At M.M. Pierce, the Battle of the Books club members (those participating in the reading, completing reviews) begin meetings in December. Meetings run from December through March, once a week.
During meetings, we discuss the books, do different types of activities or games to help remember or connect details from the various stories, and prepare for a regional scrimmage against one or two other Elementary school teams. We then participate in a county-wide competition against all participating elementary schools in Fauquier at the end of March. All interested students participate in the meetings and scrimmage, while only 5 students with the most books read, and most participation in meetings, will get to be on the competing team. All other participants will come to watch the final competition and enjoy a celebration back at school afterward as a whole team.
